We had watched, from the car park at the summit, the train disappear into the Horseshoe Curve. Paul Davies, my companion on this occasion, not noted for his calmness at the best of times, was near apoplectic when after many minutes it had not reappeared and the lengthening shadows had nearly hit the tracks. Then, it literally exploded around the corner of Beinn Odhar and slowly rattled and growled it's way over the summit, the hard work done for the day and a glide down Loch Lomondside to come. I am no longer tempted by the modern scene, preserved locomotives or special tours. Every thing has it's time. Annoyed with the much publicised four loco line-up he never got invited to, he arranged an early Sunday morning special with the York MPD shed foreman Alec Cargo. Unfortunately it was a poor morning for it, but needs must. Involved were locos 55013, 55017, 55008, 55016, 55014 and 55022. The sound of four Deltics being manouvered around the yard and one loco, 55014, being dragged out of the repair shed (I think it was officially withdrawn) to make up the numbers is a memory I will never forget. Nor the amazed guard who ran up belatedly with camera just as all four of the Deltics, that were running, disappeared up the yard to the cry Nev's York line-up. Some of the people involved. North Blyth 6: Dawn at North Blyth MPD. The smokebox door is being opened to remove accumulated ash. The time is 4 o'clock in the morning. Jeff and I had slept on a warm K1 all night - they had wonderful, horsehair-stuffed, bucket seats - and this was our first picture of the day. Summer 1966 Norwood Coke Ovens at Team Valley, Gateshead. December 1967 60019 Jeff Simpson. This time at Ribblehead on the morning of the John Fish, characteristic tab in hand, surveys the scene on Shap. John, Jeff and I were an argumentative threesome and lived for steam, Cream and Jethro Tull. John has a tome recording in great detail all our trips in the 1960's and our many disagreements. A marvellous time capsule of a wonderful period. He became a science teacher. circa 1966 Philadelphia NCB System 06: Jeff Simpson, me, Ken Groundwater, John Hunt and Dick Weisham on the last day of steam working on the NCB Philadelphia system. Considering we had slept above the sand-drying oven the previous night, I don't think we look that bad! A friend, on seeing this said Ken Groundwater 1 (aka L'eau de Terre) was one of my first railway aquaintances and many a laugh and Shap 1: Pre-dawn at Shap Station on a freezing cold Winters morning. After feeding in the infamous Carlisle crew North Blyth 3: A J27 basks in the morning light in North Blyth's roundhouse. June 1966 North Blyth 1: 43063 rests at North Blyth MPD. The time is just after dawn on a June morning, and we had spent the night travelling to Lynmouth on the footplate and back in the van with the loaded coals. All thanks to driver Cyril Lamb (not sure of the name). We spent three Friday nights at Blyth at that time, turning engines by hand, and being thrown out by drunken night staff in turn, but we always got back in! We had to, as we always went over on the last ferry!! June 1966 70035 Shap 4: On this freezing grim January day, 48471 has a helping hand approaching Shap Summit on a train of rails. Even on the bleakest of days, steam always gave a chance of a picture. January 1967 Ryhope Grange 2: 63395 ambles along the coast towards Rhyope Grange Box with a coal train from South Hetton. July 1967 Backworth: D6824 (37124) trips gingerly through Backworth, apparently so as it has a break tender and two brake vans to help it stop! circa 1967 Not the most handsome machines ever buiilt, Class 66's aside, Carlisle Upperby's Co-Bo's bask in the sun. Summer 1966 62060 arrives at South Pelaw and immediately sets about dividing the hoppers for its three trips to Consett. summer 1967 62060 sets off for Consett from South Pelaw with the first load of hoppers. Seven was the usual load for a Q6 or a K1. Summer 1967 65894 puts on a brave face, on a far from ideal last night on the Silksworth Branch. The Blue Star on the smokebox door an appreciation of a much quaffed local beverage. It would appear that I had over indulged, judging by the unsharpness of the image! Summer 1967 63431 blasts through New Kyo on our evening run up to Consett, the rails highlighted in the last of the sun. Summer 1967 48448 with standard lens shows how well the Rose Grove 8F's were maintained at that time, although a lot of this was due to enthusiasts with lots of diesel and paraffin, which gave a clean shining finish. Summer 1967 48448 looking mightily impressive at Rose Grove(Burnley) MPD taken with my first long focus lens, a late addition to my standard lens, which is all I had previously used. Summer 1967 As can be seen from the exhaust, this 8F is making slow progress through Chapel en le Frith on its way to the Peak District. February 1968 There I was on a July morning looking for love (apologies to Uriah Heep). J27 55855 was just as welcome, taken from a handy pit heap as it heads an early morning turn up the Silksworth Branch. Summer 1967 70032 Late evening again at South Pelaw sees a Q6 returning from Consett on steel flats. Summer 1967 65855 runs off the South Hetton branch at Ryhope on a coal train for South Dock. Summer 1967 Very late of a Summers evening a 9F stands at the ore unloading triangle at Consett steelworks as the lights of the town twinkle in the background. A traumatic night as I remember, the driver had arranged to slow at Birtley Station to let us jump of the van, but the interpretation of this was we jumped off into total darkness at quite a speed and were lucky to escape with just a few bruises from the ensuing tumbles! I can still hear the Westinghouse pump's syncopations. Summer 1966 Britannias 70001 This is one of my favorite pictures, a study in gloom. It had just stopped raining at Northwich Viaduct as this 8F-hauled freight headed West. I don't recal how the hovering scene arose, but I was lucky there was just sufficient highlights and a wonderful five-planked waggon to go at!. Summer 1967 34104 Jeff Simpson snaps away, I wonder if I'm in his shot. The K1 at Blyth was made for textural close-ups, and to take us north to Morpeth and beyond on a promised footplate. The turn, alas, was cancelled. June 1966 Another shot where I never got to the spot (it happens quite a lot), only included because of the dramatic smoke effect caused by the double-headed 8F's at Chapel en le Frith. I must admit that in the 1960's I had no aptitude for the scenic shot as I was so wrapped up in my own little world of darkness, light and atmosphere. February 1968 44822 stands at Manchester Victoria on banking duties throughout the night. Believe it, or not, the fireman said I could have all the plates for a fiver! A fiver? It would have been a miracle if I had half a crown(12.5 p) to spare. Summer 1967 73159 is standing at the extreme end of Manchester Exchange. The train is the 01:00 Manchester - Wigan portion of a Liverpool - Glasgow sleeper. The dreaded sleeping car attendants were worse by far than the normal ticket collectors and you could expect short shrift if caught with your platform ticket. But it was a good kipping service to Carlisle. Summer 1967 Early on a damp morning at Preston and the Black 5 station pilot watches a south-bound freight take the up fast line past Preston No. 1 Box on a fitted freight (many thanks to Stuart Parkes for information). Summer 1967 Black fives at Manchester Victoria attracting a variety of onlookers on a Saturday afternoon. A quaint Mancunian custom, or could they be waiting, like me, to see what would be on the Colne - Redbank parcels! Summer 1967 The end of the line at Rose Grove MPD. It all comes down to this bleak end, cast upon a muck heap. Summer 1967 At rest, the fireman of a Manchester Victoria Class 5 banker puts his feet up during a lull in the proceedings. Summer 1967 70035 44911 stands at Preston Station heating sleeping cars, the rain creating good reflections. Summer 1967 Q6 at South Dock with oil cans and hammer. Posed? Never! Summer 1966 Preparations for departure on a Britannia, at Carlisle, are well underway. Summer 1967 70038 47531, one of Kingmoors Jinties stands awaiting it's fate. Summer 1966 70008 45025, scrubbed up nicely for the occasion, pauses at Preston Station on the last up Lady Park and the Shop Pit exchange sidings is where I retreated to when BR steam finished. Jim McIver, the driver, and the weigh cabin crew made me more than welcome in the late 1960's. Jim in particular, who taught me to drive the locos and attend to all their needs. I even derailed a train going into Lady Park Drift mine! The scene here shows No.81 pushing a full load of wagons up to the rope incline, after rolling past the weighbridge. Circa 1969 Lady Park. This marvellous fellow, suitably attired, was the brakeman, who, when we had collected our load from Lady Park Drift, weighed it and then pushed it up to the rope incline end, would pin the brakes on the wagons and clamp the rake with the massive mechanical chock till the cable was attached. Circa 1969 First stop after school or at weekends was South Pelaw Junction. When you had grown tired of trainspotting and wanted to see and photograph steam locomotives, what better spot could you pick than this. Lots going on, you thought it could never end. Summer 1966
