Another shot from the last trip. As I wanted shots in the Horseshoe Curve I walked up from my caravan in Tyndrum to the curve each day and spent the entire time there. The timekeeping was abysmal and on this occasion, being devoured by midges, I had given up and headed home. But, then, behind me I heard it. I hurried to a spot where I could climb up to track level and just managed to grab this power shot. Then I continued on my way, the midges driven even wilder after my rapid sweating ascent. We had watched, from the car park at the summit, the train disappear into the Horseshoe Curve. Paul Davies, my companion on this occasion, not noted for his calmness at the best of times, was near apoplectic when after many minutes it had not reappeared and the lengthening shadows had nearly hit the tracks. Then, it literally exploded around the corner of Beinn Odhar and slowly rattled and growled it's way over the summit, the hard work done for the day and a glide down Loch Lomondside to come. The chap hanging out the window was like a Monkey on Speed. I wonder if he survived it? I'm pleased I never moved! Pentax 6x7 16th June 1985" /></a>

This spot was known as the "Inverhaggernie Hole". In the afternoon cloud from the west would invariably build up, as in the background here. Our saviour, was Ben Lui to the east. It's massive bulk could tear great holes in the approaching cloud so we could get the shot. Here, again, we were very lucky! Pentax 6x7 10th May 1988(P)" /></a>

On rare occasions you not only capture your main subject but something of the atmosphere of your chosen location. The atmospheric nuances of a West Highland evening are evident here; it still gives me a sense of warmth and joy, and remains one of my favourite shots. Pentax 6x7 23rd May 1987" /></a>

As a little postscript to this picture after some discussion on a web forum regarding the loco being set in reverse and my comment being "eager for the off". The engine has just backed on after a loco change - if you look at the first window you will see an enthusiast looking at the fireman coupling up. The driver would be looking back from the cab after compressing the buffers with his hand on the steam brake. He only would then put the loco into forward gear for the off once this operation was safely completed. The departure, imminent. Don't know what happens on NYMR, though.
