37190 breasts Tyndrum Summit on the 15:24 Fort William - Blyth Alcan hoppers. Note the old Tyndrum Summit sign was still in place at this time. Pentax 6x7 9th August 1984 |
40004 rounds the Penmanshiel Deviation on the Leith - Haverton Hill ammonia tanks. The memorial to the two victims of the Penmanshiel Tunnel collapse can be seen in the right background. Pentax 6x7 10th August 1984 |
37026 "Loch Awe" gathers speed, at Dalrigh, after leaving Tyndrum Lower on the 08:00 Oban - Glasgow. A well known Geordie photographer who was at his breakfast in The Loch Awe Hotel at the time, later commented that he had seen the loco run into Oban the previous night, and thought it looked grubby. Hope the kippers were nice! Pentax 6x7 11th May 1985 |

37108 and 37184 hard at work on the climb to Tyndrum Summit, above Auch Gleann, on the 06:05 Mallaig Junction - Mossend ABS freight, but there's still time for a waive from the crew! Pentax 6x7 30th May 1985(P) |
37014, racing the approaching storm, climbs away from Crainlarich and is seen at Inverhaggernie Farm Crossing on the 16:50 Glasgow (Queen Street) - Fort William. Paul "Schummacher" Davies had picked me up off this train at Crianlarich, screamed at me to get in the car and raced off to Inverhaggernie Farm - this involved a 180 degree turn under the double-gated Oban Line, across the sleeper farm bridge, though the farm and with another gate negotiated up to the crossing in the few minutes it took the train to get here from Crianlarich. We then exchanged greetings! Pentax 6x7 14th June 1985 |
37026 "Loch Awe" has just shut off power after a noisey climb through Glen Falloch and is seen approaching Crianlarich on the 18:20 Glasgow (Queen Street) - Oban. Pentax 6x7 15th June 1985 |
37111 "Loch Eil Outward Bound" and Ethel pull out of Bridge of Orchy on a magnificent Highland morning on the 21:00 Euston - Fort William sleepers. We had set up here, not knowing what was on the sleepers. It whistled and the revs rose and set off. But when Paul and l saw it pop out behind the trees, we nearly had a synchronised seizure. I always thought this the best livery ever, but never got the whole train in better nick. Superb train, superb setting and a service train to boot! It just didn't get better than this. 37051 and Ethel, dark as a Burroughs poem, finally breast Tyndrum Summit after a long and noisy climb from Bridge of Orchy on the Sundays 17:42 Fort William - Euston sleepers. We had watched, from the car park at the summit, the train disappear into the Horseshoe Curve. Paul Davies, my companion on this occasion, not noted for his calmness at the best of times, was near apoplectic when after many minutes it had not reappeared and the lengthening shadows had nearly hit the tracks. Then, it literally exploded around the corner of Beinn Odhar and slowly rattled and growled it's way over the summit, the hard work done for the day and a glide down Loch Lomondside to come. The chap hanging out the window was like a Monkey on Speed. I wonder if he survived it? I'm pleased I never moved! Pentax 6x7 16th June 1985 |
